This recipe for Candied Sweet Potatoes, often called Candied Yams in the South, is a favorite Thanksgiving side dish. It features sliced sweet potatoes cooked in a sweet, spiced syrup until tender and glazed.
Peel 4 medium to large sweet potatoes. Cut them into half inch rounds. Add 2 tbsp of water to a pot on medium heat. Add in half of your sweet potatoes. Sprinkle 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar on top and 1 tsp salt on top. Add the rest of your sweet potatoes on top along with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar on top and 1 tsp salt on top. Sprinkle 1 tbsp cinnamon and 1 tsp nutmeg. Drizzle on 2 tbsp vanilla extract. Squeeze juice from one navel orange. Place lid on pot partially and cook for 12 min, do not touch sweet potatoes. Remove lid and stir sweet potatoes, moving the ones from the top to the bottom. Cook uncovered for around 20 min, stir occasionally. Cooking time may vary based on your stove. Remove from heat and add half a stick of sliced butter and place lid back on pot for a few min until butter melts. Stir and enjoy.
